Former Friends star Matt LeBlanc has stepped down from his role as a host of the BBC’s Top Gear.

In a statement, LeBlanc said he decided to quit the show due to the amount of travel time it required.

LeBlanc said the “time commitment and extensive travel takes me away from my family and friends more than I’m comfortable with.”

“It’s unfortunate, but for these reasons I will not be continuing my involvement with the show,” he added. “I will forever be a Top Gear fan and I wish the team continued success. Thanks for a great drive.”

LeBlanc moved into the position following the abrupt and unexpected departure of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. He hosted the show alongside famous radio host Chris Evans and joined Rory Reid and Chris Harris on screen following Evans’ eventual departure from the program.

The next series of Top Gear will still be hosted by the Hollywood actor, however that will be his last. In total, LeBlanc will have starred in four seasons of the world-famous motoring show.

“The next series of Top Gear promises to be something very special and we have great plans to welcome a new co-host to join the team for 2019 and beyond,” said BBC Two boss Patrick Holland.

In a tweet, co-host Chris Harris said he had a great time working with LeBlanc and understood the reasoning behind his decision to leave.

The BBC says attention “will now turn to who could replace LeBlanc,” on the show going forward.
